Folger Institute
01/15/21
Fellowships of $3,500 to USA, Canada, and International scholars holding a Ph.D. and archivists, curators, librarians, creative artists, dramaturgs, playwrights, performers, and filmmakers for research projects related to Shakespeare or early modern world culture. The four-week non-residential fellowships should make use of collections, archives, libraries, or digital resources. Due to a major building renovation project beginning in 2020, the Folger Institute is offering fellowships for research and writing away from the Folger during the construction period.
The Folger Institute is committed to continuing its support of collections-based research, and to providing scholars with the resources they need to pursue and advance their work. The renovation offers the Institute the opportunity to create new kinds of awards and to make fellowships more adaptable. The global pandemic, ongoing at the time of this announcement, requires that adaptability. In 2021-2022, Folger research fellowships will place value on many different forms and phases of scholarly enterprise as well as places to pursue it.
In their applications, scholars should make a strong case for their proposed topic’s importance, its relevance to a field of study broadly supported by, or in conversation or critique with, the Folger Library’s collections and programs, emphasizing the originality and sophistication of its approach. They should also describe the work they hope to undertake with a justification of why and how this agenda will advance their project. In 2021-2022, Folger fellowships will support the many kinds of work which are necessary when the Institute undertakes collections-based research: access to digital resources, reproduction and permissions fees for images of rare materials at libraries and archives, time to organize notes and images, support for work-life balance, support for time to write.
Applicants are encouraged to make their own best cases to pursue their research. In 2021-2022, travel is not required for Folger Fellowships. Here are some scenarios an applicant might propose:
